COVID-19 Vaccination and Unemployment - Everything You Need to Know

Covid-19 continues to create more questions than answers. Currently, one of the biggest unknowns is regarding the Covid vaccine. With some employers trying to mandate vaccines, employees are scrambling to know their rights. Find out everything you need to know about the vaccine and unemployment.

Are Vaccines Mandatory?

This is a very loaded question. In January 2021, the Supreme Court stated that there could be no federal vaccine mandate. If passed, the mandate would have allowed any business with over 99 employees to require a vaccine or weekly Covid testing. Because the mandate was struck down, the issue is left to a federal and individual level.

In some places, unvaccinated employees are fired or forced to quit. But this doesn’t mean that there are no safeguards in place to help these employees. In some states, people who are fired or quit because of vaccine requirements are eligible for unemployment benefits. Nevertheless, most employees don’t realize that they’re eligible for these benefits.

To answer the question, some businesses in certain states have required their employees to get vaccines. It’s up to you to know your rights and to seek unemployment benefits if your state offers them. The more educated you are, the better you can handle the situation.

Are You Eligible for Unemployment Benefits?

As a general rule, a person is only eligible for unemployment benefits if they quit or are fired by no fault of their own. However, vaccinations are a gray area. If a person quits because they are being forced to get vaccinated, are they quitting by no fault of their own?

This is a new conundrum and one that every state is handling uniquely. In some states, individuals aren’t eligible for unemployment unless being vaccinated would affect their religion or health. In other places, there are no such limitations.
